Here you will find information about our park, Family Parks Travel Rewards, local amenities, eateries, as well as things to see and do while you’re in Taranaki.

What You Need To Know

Check Out

Check-out time is 10 am, unless by prior arrangement.

Accessible/Family Bathrooms

Accessible/Family Bathrooms are available at each amenity block. A key is available from reception.

Alcohol

Alcohol is only permitted on your site, cabin, or deck. Please don’t walk around the park drinking alcohol.

BBQs

BBQs are available near each amenity block. Please leave them clean for the next user.

Behaviour

Behaviour in the park must be respectful, considerate and family friendly. Use your common sense, and if there are any issues, let the duty manager know. Please keep the noise down between 10 pm and 7 am (with some discretion on New Year’s Eve).

Books

Books can be left/swapped/borrowed at the free library and book exchange in the kitchens at the amenity blocks.

Cabin Servicing

Cabin servicing is offered every second day of your stay by default. If you are wanting to refresh your towels, face cloths, bathmat, tea towels or dish cloths at any stage throughout your stay, you can exchange them at our reception or you can leave them in the cabin servicing box in your cabin and leave the box on your deck by midday. If your stay with us is six nights or more, you can request a full service and linen change. Please arrange a day and time with our friendly reception team.

Damages and Breakages

Damages and breakages that are not reported and/or are a result of vandalism will be charged for.

Electrical Warrants

Electrical Warrants are required and must be current for all vehicles connecting to Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park’s power.

First Aid

First Aid supplies and an AED (automated external defibrillator) are available at Reception.

Fitzroy Beach

Fitzroy Beach is a surf beach, and swimmers should be prepared for strong waves and currents. Swim between the flags from late November to end of March when the beach is patrolled by Fitzroy Beach Surf Club. At other times of the year, take care and watch for rips before entering the water.

Fridges and Freezers

Fridges and Freezers are available in each communal kitchen. Please write your name and departure date on all items and remove your items before checking out. Park staff may remove items not named/dated.

Internet

Internet is available via the network “Fitzroy Beach HP”. Once connected, you’ll need to login via the HQ WiFi Portal. You’ll get a password for complimentary data when you check in, and if you need more, data packs can be purchased through the portal. If you are having any issues with the WiFi, our receptionists may be able to help or you can call the help desk on 0800 479 434

Kitchen Facilities

Kitchen facilities are available at each amenity block. The kitchen in Block A closes overnight at 10 pm. In summer, the kitchen in Block B is available 24 hours.

Laundry Facilities

Laundry facilities are available at each amenity block. Payment is by paywave card and there are instructions on the machines. Laundry powder is available at reception in exchange for a donation to a selected charity.

Linen Hire

Linen Hire including sheets, towels, duvets etc. is available at reception. Charges may apply.

Parking

Parking for one vehicle is available outside your cabin or within your site boundaries. Please do not park on other sites or in other areas of the park. Additional vehicles can be parked in the public carparking outside the park gates.

Pets

Pets are welcome on site from 7 February to 20 December at a rate of $5 per pet per night, as long as we know in advance. They must always be kept on a leash around the park and are not allowed in any of the buildings including cabins, glamping tents, amenity blocks, and reception.

Play Areas

Play areas in the area include jumping pillow, play area, and trampolines on site as well as a children’s playground across the carpark from the main entrance of the park (near the Fitzroy Surf Lifesaving Club and public pool).

Reception

Reception is open from 9 am to 6 pm every day, with extended hours from November to April. Current reception hours are displayed on the sign by the reception door.

Recycling

Recycling should be separated and washed and can then be placed in your cabin recycling container or the blue recycling bins at waste stations around the park. Please sort items into the correct bins.

Showers

Showers are available at each amenity block and free to use. Please help us to conserve water by limiting your shower to 5 minutes.

Smoking and Vaping

Smoking and vaping are strictly prohibited in all cabins, park buildings and public spaces including the playground/jumping pillow and decks of amenity buildings. Please ensure all doors and windows are closed if smoking or vaping outside your cabin.

Speed Limit

Speed limit in the park is 10 km/h (walking pace) at all times. Be aware of cyclists and children, especially when exiting your bay to the main park road.

Visitors

Visitors to the park need to register at reception on arrival. They can arrive between 9 am and 6 pm and must leave the park by 10 pm. You are responsible for your visitors’ behaviour. Visitors’ cars must be parked in the public car park.

Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park is proud to be part of the Family Parks group, which includes holiday parks across New Zealand and Australia. The parks are in a range of great locations, all have great facilities, and most are pet-friendly.

With a Family Parks Travel Rewards membership, you can become part of the family and save 10% on every stay at a Family Park (max. $20 per stay on sites, $40 per stay in cabins). The membership is only $40 for 2 years. If you’re keen to join, just ask one of our friendly reception tea

Shopping

The Fitzroy shopping village is about 1 km away, on Devon St. There you’ll find a post shop, a Four Square, cafés, hot bread shops, a bakery, a liquor store, takeaway shops, two pubs, second hand shops, design and gift shops, and a selection of other shops.

The city centre (including Centre City mall) is around 3 km away along the coastal walkway, or a 5-minute drive. You may also find what you need at the Valley Megacentre (which has a range of big box retailers). The nearest supermarket is Woolworths at the Valley Megacentre. Pak’n’Save, New World, and another Woolworths can be found in the city, between the two one-way streets.

Fitzroy Beach
Just across the walkway!
Fitzroy Beach is great for swimming (in the summer), surfing (all year round), dog walking, and family fun. Fitzroy Surf Lifesaving Club patrol the beach during weekends in the summer months and all week during the six-week school holiday period.


New Plymouth Coastal Walkway
Runs along the front of the park!
The award-winning Coastal Walkway is a seaside path that stretches from Port Taranaki (6 km away) across the front of Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park and through to Taranaki Cycle Park in Bell Block (5 km away).
The walkway is ideal for walking, running, cycling, scooting, or skating. Road user rules apply so cyclists must wear helmets. Dogs are allowed on the walkway but must be on a leash.



Lake Rotomanu and Te Rewa Rewa Bridge
Clemow Rd, or on the Coastal Walkway
Stop in and visit Lake Rotomanu as you travel on the Coastal Walkway towards Bell Block. You can take a short walk around the lake or stop for a picnic. Right by the lake you’ll find Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, which spans the Waiwhakaiho River, linking Bell Block with the city. The bridge’s design reflects the history and mythology of the area. On a clear day, you’ll be rewarded with great views of the iconic bridge framing Mt Taranaki.



Mitchell Cycles
477 Devon Street East, Strandon
Hire a bike and explore New Plymouth on two wheels. Mitchell Cycles is open for bike hire Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings.
If Mitchell Cycles is closed or unavailable try Cycle Inn (on Devon St in the city centre) or Chaddy's Charters (Ocean View Parade).


East End Skate Park
East End Park, 1 km via the Coastal Walkway
It’s just a short walk/scoot/skate along the coastal walkway from Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park to East End Reserve. This skate park has ramps to suit all abilities and ages. Bring your board or your skates!


New Plymouth Surf School
Fitzroy Beach
It's never too late to learn to surf. New Plymouth Surf School offers lessons for children and adults as well as women-only surf coaching at Fitzroy beach. Whether you're a complete beginner or want to improve your surfing skills, the focus of their lessons is on having fun.
Wetsuit and board hire included.


Fitzroy Golf Course
Record St, Fitzroy
The beautiful Fitzroy Golf Course shares our boundary and boasts amazing sea views. You can get there easily from the far end of the Park, or vehicle access is via Record Street. Casual players welcome.
There are also several golf courses within a short drive: Inglewood, Kaitake, Manukorihi, Ngamotu, New Plymouth, Waitara, and Westown.

Pukekura Park
Fillis St
Often described as the jewel in New Plymouth's crown, Pukekura Park covers 52ha right in the heart of the city and is one of New Zealand's premier botanical gardens. The park includes a Fernery and Display Houses as well as the TSB Bowl of Brooklands and Brooklands Zoo.
Pukekura Park hosts the annual TSB Festival of Lights each summer (mid-December to late January), which is an absolute must-do!

Brooklands Zoo is a FREE, family focused zoo which is home to a diverse variety of species including farmyard animals, reptiles and amphibians, otters, meerkats, monkeys, and birds. There are regular keeper talks, a walk-through free-flight aviary, picnic tables, and a playground. (And did we mention it’s free?!)



TSB Bowl of Brooklands 
Brooklands Drive, in Pukekura Park
The TSB Bowl of Brooklands is a unique venue comprising an impressive outdoor sound stage and a large grass amphitheatre set against the backdrop of New Plymouth’s Pukekura Park. The bowl is a spectacular venue for summer concerts and when night comes, visitors and performers are spellbound as the lighting on the stage and surrounding trees takes effect.


Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Len Lye Centre

The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is New Plymouth’s museum of contemporary art. The Len Lye Centre is dedicated to the pioneering filmmaker and kinetic sculptor, Len Lye. Experience innovative and provocative work by New Zealand and international artists, talks, tours, art-making, workshops, and more! Open daily.


Puke Ariki Museum, Library, and i-SITE

Puke Ariki is an integrated knowledge hub. The central New Plymouth site combines a museum, library, research centre and i-SITE. Explore Puke Ariki’s three permanent galleries showcasing life in Taranaki, its unique geology, flora and fauna, and the museum’s Māori taonga. Two temporary galleries host a wide range of changing exhibitions. Open daily. Free entry.


Todd Energy Aquatic Centre
Tisch Avenue
The Todd Energy Aquatic Centre is a swimming complex located adjacent to the Coastal Walkway, with access off Tisch Avenue. Includes indoor pools, lane swimming, outdoor pools and diving boards (summer only), hydroslides, wave machine, water features, spa pool, tots pool, sauna and steam room, and an onsite cafe. Open daily.


Paritutu Rock
Centennial Drive
An invigorating 15 minute ascent takes you up 100 metres to the most amazing panorama of the beautiful Sugar Loaf Islands. Turn 90° for incredible views of New Plymouth and the surrounding district. The climb includes some rock clambering, and it’s a good idea to have a windproof jacket with you.


Chaddy’s Charters
Ocean View Parade
Chaddy’s Charters is an award winning New Plymouth tourist institution. Their most popular option is a wildlife cruise on an old English lifeboat to NZ’s most northern fur seal colony. They also offer bike, kayak and standup paddleboard hire and lessons.


Lake Mangamahoe
Off SH3 heading South
Lake Mangamahoe is a 15 minute drive south, on State Highway 3. Enter at the main entrance for a 2 hour/6 km circuit walk with amazing views of the lake and Mt Taranaki. Or enter at Plantation Rd for the best mountain biking in New Plymouth. New Plymouth Mountain Bike Club’s network of mountain bike trails range from easy to advanced and are great fun for the whole family.


The Wind Wand
Centre of town / 3 km on the Coastal Walkway
The Wind Wand is on the Coastal Walkway opposite the i-Site and Puke Ariki. The sculpture was designed by Len Lye, and built from his designs in 1999. An iconic feature on the coastal walkway, the red light in the sphere on the 48-metre wand can be seen from many places in the city


Taranaki Aviation Transport and Technology Museum
Off SH3 heading South
TATATM is near Lake Mangamahoe, a 15 minute drive south of Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park. The museum explains the history of farming, energy and technology in Taranaki. Whether you’re a family looking for a new activity or an enthusiast looking to learn more, TATATM has plenty of interesting and interactive displays to explore. Open Saturdays and Sundays, School and Public Holidays.


Tūpare Gardens
487 Mangorei Rd
Tūpare is a premier landscaped garden with a unique homestead, originally developed in 1932. Soak up the atmosphere of the gardens, enjoy a barbecue and a swim at the river flat by the Waiwhakaiho River, and explore the Chapman-Taylor designed house.

Surf Highway 45

Around the coast
This is 100km of stunning views, whichever way you look. Surf Highway 45 runs between New Plymouth and Hāwera, following the curve of the coast. You’ll have amazing beaches and surf breaks (Back Beach, Oakura, Kumera Patch, Stent Rd, Opunake, Mangahume, Kaupokonui) on one side and amazing mountain views on the other. It’s a great drive for surfers and non-surfers alike.


Mt Taranaki/ Te Papakura o Taranaki

There are three main parking areas/entry points on Mt Taranaki, with walks lasting from ten minutes to several days. The nearest Visitors’ Centre to New Plymouth is the one at North Egmont (follow the signs from Egmont Village) where you can join the Pouakai Circuit (for amazing mountain views at the tarns) or begin a summit climb. There are also short walks for all abilities, bathroom facilities, and a cafe.

For access to snow in winter, East Egmont (follow the signs from Stratford) is your best bet. And the Wilkies Pools walk at Dawson Falls Visitor Centre (on the South side of the mountain) is a highlight.

For the quickest way to the famous reflective lake view, start at the carpark at Mangorei Road end. It’s a 4 -5 hour return walk to the tarn.


Pukeiti Gardens

A 30-40 minute drive from Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park, in the foothills of Mt Taranaki, Pukeiti's rhododendrons and other exotics create an explosion of colour amidst lush native rainforest. Enjoy a range of garden walks ranging from 35 minutes to two hours, explore the treehouses and activities on the self-guided Kids Treehouse Trail, grab coffee or lunch at the Founders Cafe, or walk the rainforest tracks. There’s something here for everyone. Gardens open all day every day. Free entry.


Cape Egmont Lighthouse/Museum

Cape Rd/Bayly Rd, Pungarehu
On your trip around SH45 take a detour to the Cape Egmont Lighthouse, which has been operating since 1881 and can be found on Cape Rd, just south of Pungarehu. A short drive away, on Bayly Road, you’ll find a replica lighthouse, which houses the original light, and a museum of local treasures. Insert a $2 coin to operate the lighthouse. Open Sat-Mon 11am - 3pm. Entry by donation.


Hollard Gardens

1686 Upper Manaia Rd, Kaponga
Around 1 hour from Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park, Hollard Gardens makes a wonderful stop on a drive around Mt Taranaki. The informal and intimate gardens host a variety of native and exotic plants, and there is also a family corner with a playground and barbecues, a home garden where you can explore different growing methods, and picnic areas where you can enjoy the atmosphere. Open all day every day. Free entry.

Tawhiti Museum
Tawhiti Museum

401 Ohangai Rd, Hawera
The 1-hour drive to Tawhiti Museum is worth it – the museum is a truly unique enterprise and is widely acclaimed as the best private museum in the country. Created by artist Nigel Ogle, the museum uses life size exhibits and scale models to present our heritage in a series of realistic and engaging displays. A café is on site. Seasonal opening hours.
