Salty Adventures – Ocean Activities

New Plymouth, with its stunning coastline and vibrant marine life, (think fish, porpoise, seals and even the odd orca), is a paradise for water enthusiasts. Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park, located just a stone’s throw from the beach, is the perfect base for groups looking to dive into the range of water activities available. Whether you’re into fishing, diving, sailing, kayaking, or exploring the underwater world, this guide highlights some of the best ocean adventures you can enjoy.

Fishing Trips: Cast a Line and Reel in the Fun

For those who love the thrill of the catch, New Plymouth offers excellent fishing opportunities. The waters off Fitzroy Beach are teeming with a variety of fish, making it a favourite spot for both novice and experienced anglers.

  • Boat Charters: Several local operators offer fishing charters, taking you to the best spots off the coast. These trips are great for groups, providing all the gear and guidance needed for a successful day on the water. You might catch snapper, kingfish, or even a big game fish if you’re lucky! MJ Marine Services also offers a sunset/twilight cruise.

    • Options include MJ Marine Fishing, Wild Bill Fishing Charters, Chaddy's Charters, and Epic Adventures.
    • Tip: Dawn or dusk are often the best times to try.
  • Shore Fishing: If you prefer to stay closer to land, Fitzroy Beach itself is a popular spot for shore fishing. The beach’s easy access means you can enjoy a relaxing day casting from the shore, with the possibility of reeling in some good-sized fish right from the beach. Some of the best boulder beach fishing (for snapper)  is in the south of the province, in the stretch from New Plymouth towards  Hawera. Oakura and Opunake are also good spots, a little further afield.

Scuba Diving: Discover the Underwater World

The waters around New Plymouth are not only beautiful on the surface but also rich with marine life below. Scuba diving is a fantastic way to explore the underwater wonders near Fitzroy Beach.

  • Diving Courses: For those new to diving, consider taking a beginner’s course during your stay. With professional instructors, you can learn the basics in a safe environment. Courses for the more advanced are also on offer, and weather permitting, you can head out to experience the thrill of diving in the open ocean.

Kayaking: Paddle Your Way to Adventure

Kayaking is a fantastic way to experience New Plymouth’s coastal beauty up close. The calm waters near Fitzroy Beach make it an ideal spot for a leisurely paddle, whether you’re exploring with friends or joining a guided tour.

  • Kayak Hire: Kayaks can be rented locally, allowing you to explore at your own pace. Paddle along the shoreline, enjoy the serene atmosphere, and perhaps spot some marine wildlife along the way. The views of Mount Taranaki from the water are spectacular, especially on a clear day.
  • Group Courses and Tours: For a more structured experience, consider booking a guided kayaking tour. These tours are great for groups, offering insights into the local marine environment and the chance to visit hidden coves and beaches that are otherwise inaccessible.
