Day-tripping with the Family—A Day in New Plymouth

New Plymouth, nestled on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island, is a haven for families seeking a blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and outdoor adventure. If you're staying at Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park, you’re in the perfect spot to explore some of the best family-friendly attractions that New Plymouth has to offer. Whether you’re up for a day of exploration or a relaxing afternoon, here’s a guide to the must-visit places near Fitzroy Beach, complete with a suggested day-trip itinerary.

Start Your Day at Pukekura Park

Kick off your family adventure with a visit to Pukekura Park, one of New Zealand’s most beautiful botanical gardens. Located just a short cycle from Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park, Pukekura Park is a perfect spot for families to explore together.

  • Highlights: Wander through the fernery and display houses, take a leisurely stroll around the tranquil lake, or let the kids run wild in the playgrounds. Don’t miss the iconic Poet’s Bridge, the Japanese Garden, and the stunning Tea House, where you can grab a snack or coffee.
  • Tip: If you’re visiting in summer, check out the annual Festival of Lights, where the park is transformed into a magical wonderland after dark, with light displays, music, and family-friendly entertainment.

Coastal Walkway: A Scenic Adventure for All Ages

Next, head to the award-winning Coastal Walkway, an 11-kilometre path that stretches along New Plymouth’s stunning coastline. This flat, family-friendly walkway offers breathtaking views of the Tasman Sea and is perfect for walking, cycling, or even scootering.

  • Highlights: The kids will love spotting the sculptures along the way, including the iconic Wind Wand by Len Lye. Take a break at one of the many playgrounds or picnic spots along the route, or simply enjoy the refreshing sea breeze as you walk.
  • Tip: Pack a picnic and stop at East End Reserve, which has a great playground, skate park, and plenty of space for the kids to play.

Lunch Stop: Local Eats

After working up an appetite on the Coastal Walkway, take a break for lunch at one of New Plymouth’s family-friendly eateries. Consider stopping by one of the local cafes, dining in, or grabbing a bite to enjoy at a park or by the beach.

Recommendations for all the generations:

  • Head to The Federal Store, a popular cafe with a retro vibe that serves delicious food and has a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
  • Try The Coffee Club, Fitzroy, opened in 2023 and is well known for its yummy breakfast, brunch and lunch offerings, as well as the coffee of course!
  • For coffee-lovers and foodies of all descriptions, you absolutely must check out Liardet Street Projects, one of New Plymouth's hidden gems. It’s the perfect spot for when your squad can’t agree on just one type of cuisine and sits at a very central location.

Afternoon Exploration: Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Puke Ariki Museum

For a dose of culture and history (re-charge your body while charging the mind), spend your afternoon visiting the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Puke Ariki Museum, both located in the heart of New Plymouth.

  • Govett-Brewster Art Gallery: This contemporary art gallery is home to works by local and international artists, with interactive exhibits that will engage both adults and children. The attached Len Lye Centre, with its shimmering facade, is a work of art in itself.
  • Puke Ariki Museum: Just a short walk away, Puke Ariki offers a deep dive into the history and culture of the Taranaki region. With interactive exhibits and fascinating displays, it’s a great spot for kids to learn while having fun.
  • Tip: Check out any family-focused workshops or activities that might be happening during your visit at either location.

Still have some energy left?

For the younger kids, a trip to Go Wild Indoor Fun Park or Kidz Korner will surely finish them off. Or for the stronger kids, young and mature adults, with energy to burn and a sense of adventure, how about taking on the challenge of a climb up Paritutu Rock?

  • Recommendation: Not for the faint-hearted or those with a hint of vertigo, but definitely achievable for your average person. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes up and the same down, with amazing views along the way.
  • Tips: Make sure to wear good footwear. Also, The Rock is 7.6 km from Fitzroy Holiday Park (basically from one side of town to the other), so you may need a car, especially after the climb!

Wrap Up Your Day back at Fitzroy Beach

After a day of exploration, unwind (or collapse) back at Fitzroy Beach. Let the kids splash in the waves or build sandcastles as you relax and soak in the serene atmosphere. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a beautiful sunset over the water, and just past Paritutu Rock—the perfect end to a day of adventure.
